b. 1916A veteran Hammer director whose work ranged from the brilliant (Quatermass and the Pit) to the downright awful (The Scars of Dracula), with some decent work in-between (The Vampire Lovers). Outside Hammer, his TV work (including The Avengers, The Persuaders and The Saint), Amicus films (Asylum, And Now the Screaming Starts!) and the early disaster movie A Night to Remember remain well-known.
