In 1910 Hong Kong, a secret criminal society called The Tongs is feared by everyone.
This is a rather sedate, unremarkable thriller that could have been much more exciting in the hands of a better director, such as Don Sharp. The action sequences are sloppily choreographed, and the pace is slow. The array of accents attempting to sound Chinese is embarrassingly bad, turning out variously as Welsh, Indian and French.
Nevertheless, the film boasts splendid art direction. The Bray backlot is transformed beautifully into a Hong Kong harbour, seen below in composite shots with matte paintings.
